FEAR: the only barrier to WILL.
alright, i know what you're thinking - what is this tosh, or: not another emo post? (i must point out that i don't generally do emo posts anyway!) but no; this is something i picked up from the Green Lantern movie, which inevitably struck a chord with me.
judging from my previous posts, you'd by now establish (well, you SHOULD, at least) that i'm a huge, colossal Smallville fan. yes, i am still a fan of our famous superhero boy scout, but i've just realised that i've never actually much thinking into it. i've always liked superman because of
smallville, and it's high school arc is actually quite compelling, especially to a student like me. i've just never exactly admired the guy, if you know what i'm saying.
prior to discovering the green lantern's origins, i've never discovered the one true superhero to come swooping in to save the day as well. they've all just been highly interesting charades of colours and muscles, with an air of extraordinaire.
well, let's have a little play-by-play analysis of some famous superheroes to prove my point shall we?
Exhibit A: Superman

so, the very own man of steel was raised from a humble small town, yearning to be "normal" while fulfilling his destiny that has already been decided beforehand. this struggle is a classic example against over-expecting parents, however selfless and noble his aims are. also, his bumbling exterior probably goes to reinforce the phrase: never judge a book by its cover. NEXT!
Exhibit B: Batman

the much more macho and handsome overgrown bat compared to severus snape here has had a stab at Death once, during his close encounter with bats (at least that's what i've gathered from an old movie adaptation). with much gusto in his new life, he sets out to pimp himself with nifty little gadgets only a multi-billionaire could possibly afford. seeing as i've never experienced both scenarios, i'd say i'm pretty much detached from this fellow gotham city saviour. the same goes for:
Exhibit C: Ironman

but this advanced tinman i rather like. he's got the swagger of a businessman with the heart of a...Byronic man (?). also similar is:
Exhibit D: Green Arrow

okay, i only like our green modern-day robin hood when he's played by justin hartley. don't judge.
Exhibit E: Spiderman

our friendly neighbour spiderman is definitely a pure underdog story - picked on at school, nerdy, geeky, etc...until he was bitten by a spider. everyone is then pitted against him as his innocence dies. pretty interesting, but still...nothing to ring the bell there.
Exhibit F: Green Lantern

now this...is something different. hal jordan lives in ignorance of fear and tries filling in the shoes his father left him. being slightly reckless, he lives life on the fast lane, probably to hide that teeny tiny insecurity of his. he is claimed by the Ring, and must now learn to curb fear with is the only poison to will power. determination is all it takes, and this is such a valuable lesson - have the courage to overcome fear and make way for will.
